Saturday: A day off in Amsterdam.....

Saturday couldn't come quick enough this week... I arrived back late on the sunday from Berlin, then worked all week and really missed my weekend long lies. By saturday... all I could do was collapse in bed.... get up late.... and catch up on washing. There's next to nothing in the house that would let me construct a decent meal, so a phone call from the Bulgarian Bride with an invite to dinner is very welcomed when it comes. It always feels like being with family when I'm over at Diemen, so it's a good place to relax.

After Berlin, I've decided that I need to see more of the Netherlands and do a bit more than sleep, drink and eat in Amsterdam. Given that Mowgli is coming over and we'll be a bit more active than my current circles of drinkers, I go shopping.

I buy..

....because the good weather has started and I want to start mixing my heallthy living with getting out and about and doing some stuff.....

......because I have spent very little time outside of Amsterdam in my four years in this country, and I want to start being a tourist at the weekends a little bit more...

..... because I'm spending 2 weeks there in July for 3 conferences I have... 2 of these will be on my own, so it will make it more enjoyable if I can do a bit of sight seeing..

Once I have a bag full of books, I take off along the Amstel to make my way to diemen.... I am jumping over speed bumps and grooving out to The Colour and the Shape:

The sun is shining and I am wearing shorts, (fake)Oaklay's and a pearl jam T-Shirt... I'm in a great mood and take some pictures of the scenery in preparation for going a bit of a road trip tomorrow...

I like the road to Diemen.. it's straight and peaceful, and I can sing as I cycle without attracting so many looks....

Diemen itself is beautiful too.... I'm in a great mood, and a heron on a tree by the river makes me stop to take some photos....

Dinner is wonderful as always and we celebrate the good weather with the usual array of Bulgarian salads.... I can't wait till I get the real thing in Bansko in a week or so....

We watch the Magdaline Sisters before it;s time to go home:

It's cool to be cycling home in shorts when it;s dark and there''s a cool summer breeze keeping you awake in the early hours of the morning...

I make it home really late.....

An early start

Ugggg..... We wake up at 7am..... ready to head out to Sloterdijk. We are going to the Tommy Hilfiger factory sale

One of my friends works for Tommy, so every six months I get to go to the sample sale. Tommy Hilfiger clothes are in general a little bright for me, but it does me good to get some colour in my Wardrobe. I am shopping with Paprika, the Bulgarian Bride and a Bulgarian friend from the wedding.

The sales, are good. The clothes are very very cheap, and the bright colours encourage me to be little more extrovert in what I wear. The only bad thing about these sales, is that we have to queue for hours.

We meet the Bulgarians at Sloterdijk station which is in the North West of Amsterdam. Paprika and I sleepily get the No. 12 tram and meet up with some cold and wet Bulgarians:

We have a cup of tea before we get started.... everyone is bleary eyed and shattered..... this sale better be good...

We walk out through the industrial estates of Sloterdijk and eventually find the place. There's a big long queue and it's really raining now. Luckily we have brought umbrellas....

......we eventually get in and there's a sea of clothes racks with people hurriedly moving through racks and racks of clothes, trying things on and looking for sizes....

.....this carries on for hours... and eventually, everyone has a bag full of clothes..... I'm not sure about some of these bright colours, but it's the summer, and they were all chosen by women, which means they have to be better than my coices... right?

We've decided to head to Diemen for lunch and to try on all the clothes. This means a metro trip round the south of Amsterdam. It's a strange day, but Paprika gets to see more of Amsterdam....

We arrive in Diemen and Obi wan gets to meet Paprika. He refers to her as the "little greek lady" for most of the day. After a big Bulgarian lunch, we settle down to watch the goonies:

Obi wan is the only one that stays awake. We all snooze our way through the film because of our early start.

After our snooze, we have some more food and sit around chinwagging for a while. We head back to the flat via a tram. We were going to go out, but we are absolutely shattered, so we get some sleep before Paprika returns home the next day......

Friday...... A Gollem, A Bhudda and some beers...

After a graze stinging shower, I'm off to work again... to end what seems to have been a very long week of burning the candle at both ends.

I'm meeting Paprika for lunch... we have several things to do, but first we sit down for some food on Kalverstraat with her and my boss:

After we are fed and watered, we head to Maison de Bonnieterrie to try on some Tommy Hilfiger clothes. Tomorrow, we are going to the Factory sale, and I want to se what size Tommy Hilfiger thinks my waist is following my healthy living and gym attendance.

It's good fun nipping in and out of the changing rooms in Maison de Bonnieterrie. It's not, but it masquerades as being posh, so the staff are on you like flys on a shite as soon as you show a passing interest in clothes. Paprika does a good job of massaging the staff's belief in commission while I ascertain that I can fit into a 34" pair of jeans again(it's been a few years)

After this, we head to a little Tibeten shop. Paprika has been fascinated by the bhudda around my neck which has fuelled many a kerouac/morrison inspired cod-philosophy discussion, so I want to get her something similar.

I got my Bhudda from a friend of my sisters. She was living and working in Phucket, Thailand for the year:

A drunken man started a conversation about Bhuddism with me... I kept up with him in both Singha beers, and also in drunken philosophy, while being determined that he wasn't getting scissors anywhere near my hair. At the end of the holiday he gave everyone in my family a Bhudda. Mine has been round my neck through thick and thin for about 8 years now. It kind of reminds me to stay chilled, be aware that what I'm worried about is probably only in my mind, and that I'm in control of my future and my destiny.... or something like that.

We find something little to suit Paprika's little frame, and buy it along with a chain for it...

The little man is very nice, and gives her a little hand made purse to keep it in. I'm shocked when he asks just 10 euros for the whole thing. I feel a bit bad.... I got a nice shiny pair of converse.

.......

After my afternoon of work, we meet for coffee at the Molenpad. No one appears to be doing anything tonight, even though it's a Friday. Tomorrow we are getting up early to go to Tommy. Since we are running out of drinking nights and Paprika hasn't been yet, we should head to the Gollem:

At 7pm, we're pretty early for a Gollem session, but I decide that if we limit ourselves to 2 beers, then we can be home without crashing. I settle into my standard end of work refreshing La Chouffe:

Paprika has been itching to try two things... the first one being her second Zatte of the holiday:

Beer number two is a Rochefort:

Paprika joins me with a Kwak.... finally in the correct glass(The Zotte is out of Kwak glasses):

Half way through beer number two..... disaster strikes. Some Kiwi's arrive and I have to stay for a further drink.

I go for a Chimay Wit from the tap while Paprika juggles some Kwak:

Tonight is a special night... There is a mystcal trappist brewery known as Westvleteren. The Monks only let you buy two crates of beer at once, so it's pretty rare. Tonight the Gollem has Westvletern 6 and Westvleteren 12. The Kiwi's order some up:

Westvelteren 12:

Luckily the kiwi's have a prior engagement and are heading off to an Irish bar somewhere.....

As we are finishing the dregs of our beers and working out where to get food on the way home disaster strikes again.... everyone's favourite Bulgarian Beer Connoisseur arrives..... we have to stay for another. This time Paprika and I opt for the same tipple... a (relatively) mild Chimay red:

Our Bulgarian chum of course wastes no time and whacks straight into a Westvleteren 6. We are soon joined by an American tourist, who has come to Europe to discover himself and discovered the joys of Belgian beer. He's a jolly fellow and we drink away until we decide that home could be a good idea if we're going to make it to the Tommy sale for 8am....

The cycle ride home passes without incident...

Monday in Glasgow

Today - I am taking it easy and spending my last day for a while with my sister shopping in Glasgow. The whole family is heading up with Luke Skyetrekker also joining us...

We park at the Buchanan Galleries and then head out for some Lunch. I manage to cap off my trip to Scotland with a haggis and neeps Crepe in John Lewis. It;s delicious....

During lunch Mowgli and The Cadet join us, and we get ready to hit the shops. I manage to get two pairs of converse for 20 quid a pop:

After this we generally wander about and have a good relaxing session doing very little around the centre of Glasgow. We used to do this regularly on free afternoons when we were students... it's a great way to waste some time with some mates and I miss it..

I managed to lose my family tartan Scarf, and need to buy a new one, so we head into a tourist shop on buchanan street, which is a new experience for me. This should have been a stop over as students cos it's quite good fun watch Mowgli quote braveheart and don different glengarry hats in order to impress two polish tourists:

Next... it's off to Virgin Megastore to buy some Rawk!!! T-shirts.... If I have to go to the gym, I refuse to wear nike and lots of sporty colours, instead I'm opting for some obscure grunge T-Shirts and the best of Rock-Chique-Cheese:

Eventually, I'd like to build up to really obscure stuff where I hope that someone will ask me what "Kill Rock Stars" means or who "Mother Love Bone" were.... but until I either scour the internet, or get a screen printing set, I'll have to make do with some mainstream stuff from Virgin.

We are meeting my parents for an early dinner, but before we do so... I take Luke into Miso to see Nina's paintings. We sit down and have a coffee, before heading into the Indian restaurant next door to meet my parents, sister and brother..

It;s a pretty good meal. British Curry just isn't done in Europe:

My family head home and Luke, Mowgli and I head off to Mowgli's to pick up his V-Ball stuff before taking him to Kelvinhall:

We then go and visit Nina to say cheerio before I go back tomorrow.

Once we're back home I pack a bag quickly before heading for an early night......

Gym and Shopping

I wake up fresh on a Saturday morning - its a new experience, and feels a little strange..

I'm going to go to the Gym with The Kiwi.... It's my second time in the Gym and I'm really looking forward to it:

I manage to add rowing to my routine and generally, I'm feeling fitter and sweating less - or little enough to not be extremely embarrassed that there's a stream running off the bottom of your running machine. I'm still surprised by how easy it is:

Step 1: Play upbeat classic album on iPod
Step:2: Perform repetitive action and get fit.

The Kiwi jokingly points me towards the basketball courts. Maybe holey Chuck Taylor's aren't suitable gym footwear:

I decide to reward my fitness with a trip to Kalverstraat to stock up on more suitable Gym attire...

Normally I would avoid going to Kalverstraat at all costs on a saturday - it is full of a very slow stream of very stupid shoppers and I instantly become a supporter of american gun laws when I step foot on it. Today, I'm so chilled from working out that I can slowly donner along the street without a care in the world.

I may be going for some sports clothes, which are traditionally associatted with the common or Garden Ned in Scotland:

A ned is a scottish youth who dresses in a tracksuit and hangs around street corners... Their intelligence is directly proportionate to the whiteness of their sportswear. The DO NOT perform sport..... For this reason, long haired hippies like myself don't have much call for sports wear and find shopping for it a little hard. I have decided to grunge up my Gym experience.

Without paying over the odds for a simple pair of good running shoes, it's pretty tough to grunge up my shoes, but I'll look out for something which is both functional and alternative. The real trick is in the T-Shirt... I head into the closest CD shop and look through their T-Shirt collection for something a bit different..... I fail. I'll have to make do with my trusty Subpop T-Shirt:

and the Kurt Cobain "Grunge is dead" T-Shirt I've ordered on the internet:

Okay it's obscure, and no one is ever likely to acknowledge it's origin, but it makes me feel less self concious about looking like a ned, and once I find an Ed Vedder "I love Grunge" T-shirt I can start alternating them:

I feel very chilled after the gym and I'm ready for a wild and wonderful night out. It doesn't happen, no one seems to be in the same mood, so The Kiwi and I find ourselves wandering aimlessly around a few bars and drinking with various people who seem to have forgotten their red tin of "Ronseal Town painter"(Does exactly what it says on the tin........

Amsterdam in Kilts.

We wake up slowly and get some porridge and espresso into us. Mowgli and I are wearing kilts, and we're gonna go for a wander in the centre. Living away from home means we put our kilts when we're together. It's a lot of fun and puts you in a great mood, especially when you're just walking around the streets speaking to people.

We get on a tram in the Baarsjes, and everyone is staring. By the time we get off in Leidseplein, we are less self conscious about it. Amsterdam is a liberal city. This means two things. One is that people will holler at you even if they are not drunk, and the other is that people aren't really shocked by people who are dressed funny. This is how you can tell the Dutch/Locals from the tourists. Everyone takes a first glance, when they see two men in a kilt, but the tourists look back for a double take, and usually laugh and say hello. It feels great to be putting a smile on people's faces, adding a little joy to get them through the cold.

Apart from the casual wander, we are in town to put together some fancy dress costumes for the volleyball party tomorrow. The theme is "Cartoon Characters", so I'm going as the famous Scot Groundskeeper Willy:

And Mowgli is going as ...... well Mowgli(Hence the blog name):

I wanted to wear my kilt and I loved the simpsons, so I thought it was the perfect combination. Mowgli is a bit of an exhibitionist, so was attracted to the idea of turing up to club dressed in nothing more than orange Y-Fronts and a wig. After picking up some orange dye in a chemist, we head over to the Rosengracht to the party shop. This gives us a good walk along the Prinsengracht. It's an icey cold day. Suddenly the sweaty kilt of Bulgaria in august is a distant memory, and I'm glad of my scarf and wooly socks.

This is the first time Mowgli and I have been alone(except for a few drunken conversations last night), so it's a great walk to catch up on old times. Eventually, we arrive at the party shop on the Rozengracht. When we go in, the woman behind the counter seems pretty chuffed to have two kilted scots in the shop. It seems ironic that we are in looking for something to dress up in.

We start with the Mowgli wig. There are various black wigs but we settle on one called "The Sandra". It's a black bob, and Mowgli looks like transvestite, or no worse than some of the transvestites that I've seen in my time in Amsterdam. Next, we ask for body paint. Mowgli asks if there is a colour called "indian boy 5". She offers us a small water based colour tub. We tell her that it's for the whole body. She's laughing by now. She realises that we are full on nutters.

Next is Willy. We get a tub of yellow paint the same as "Indian boy 5". This one's probably called "springfield nuclear power yellow". We try for a red beard, but don't get too far. The girl suggests trying the Albert Kuijp market. We do however get some body glue for the beard. I want to make sure, that I'm not going to be covered with flecks of red fur all over my chin when I head off to conferences and meetings on wednesday. She sells us an alcohol based make up remover but tells us that we probably won't need it. Mowgli tells her it might come in useful for removing lipstick stains from his willy in the future. The woman now knows that we are her best customers of the day.

From here we need to go to the Albert Kuijp for red fur. We walk towards Dam Square to get a tram. Before I get on the tram, I need to get some strippenkart, so we head to Albert Heijn. As usual, the queue takes and ages and Mowgli(Like Nine Inch Nina), starts to talk to the people around him. It turns out the girl in the queue behind us is from The Gambia in West Africa, she is amazed that I've heard of her country, never mind been there when I was 16.

We head off to the tram, happy to have brightened yet another person's day.

The Albert Kuijp is a little more out of the centre, so as we arrive, we start to get more looks as we walk along the open market in our kilts. After trying a a few dressmaking shops, we find the livid red fur we are looking for. The shop assistant is quite impressed by the fact that we are dressing up as willy and Mowgli.

From here, we head off back towards the centre, where we are meeting the girls. We get a few dusk photos of Museumplein....

.......and make it Leidseplein in time to have a few beers before the volleyball players have to head off to Amstelveeen to drop off their bags before heading back to the centre for a friday night.

Sitting in a warm bar for a few beers in a bar leaves a few interesting designs on the stools:

I head back to the flat, shower and fill my belly with some of yesterdays leftovers before heading off to meet them on Leidseplein again. Also coming along for the ride is the girl I went to uni with who I was drinking with on Tuesday.

There's lots of options for the evening, but I decide that the best one to show my guests, is our usual haunt; The Gollem.

When we get there, The Kiwi and his dutch colleague are already sampling Belgium's finest. We settle down and make some introductions. Before long, Dagenham Dave comes along and we get started on the La Chouffes, Lucifers and Satans.

We have the usual great drunken fun. Mowgli is a good addition to our drinking crew.

The bar is so busy, that it's easier to go to the women's toilet than it is to go to the mens. We have long hair and skirts, so we're half way there anyway. At one point, Mowgli comes out of the toilet and there's a Dutch woman waiting to go in. I tell her that if there's pee on the seat, that it was Mowgli. She takes me seriously and grumpily demands that he come in and clean the seat.

After he follows her in. He sticks his kilted leg out of the door and shakes it, then his head, and shouts "I'm being violated". The Dutch woman is pretty pissed(Appropriate) off and protests her innocence. Mowgli just rants about how rough and wonderful Dutch women are.

Once our Bulgarian Beer connoisseur arrives, I get some russian prompts from the Space Cadet and her sister and shout them across the bar. I tell him he's a drunk!!!

He comes over and joins us, not before advising a few beers. Our drinking party is spreading across a few more tables, and we are gradually taking over the bar.

A few beers more and Marilyn the Argentinean Munro Bagger comes down to join the fun. She's a good addition to the table. Unlike the Dutch woman, she has a sense of humour, and is amused rather than annoyed when Mowgli continually refers to her as mexican.

He asks her where she's from; Buenos Aires. She asks if she knows where that is. He says Florida. It's a subsidiary of Disney(Buena Vista)

Eventually it's time to get the volleyball players to their game in Amstelveen. We have a hilarious drunken walk to the bus stop where I deposit them before heading off to the bar the kiwi girl works in where The Kiwi and Dagenham Dave are already drinking. Everyone is very impressed with the kilt, and I stay for a few beers before heading home after a long but wonderful day.
